2026 House Closure & Conservation

Is Belvedere House open to visitors in 2026?

Yes — Belvedere House Gardens & Park is fully open in 2026. All outdoor features are accessible: the gardens, parkland, Jealous Wall, all three follies, woodland trails, Lough Ennell lakeshore, the Victorian Walled Garden, the Fairy Garden, all four play areas and the Lakeside Café. The only exception is the house interior — see below.

Is the house interior closed in 2026?

Yes — the interior of Belvedere House has been closed since 2024 for Phase 3 conservation works, covering mechanical systems, electrical installations, painting and furnishing. This is the final major phase of a comprehensive restoration programme funded by Westmeath County Council, Fáilte Ireland and the EU Just Transition Fund.

The exterior of the house — the Georgian facade, the bow-ended south elevation, the views from the parkland — is visible throughout the works and is covered on the guided tours.

When will the Belvedere House interior reopen?

Westmeath County Council has indicated that the house interior is expected to reopen later in 2026 once Phase 3 works are complete. No confirmed reopening date has been announced. Check belvedere-house.ie for updates — they'll announce it prominently on the homepage when it's confirmed.

Are the guided tours still running during the conservation works?

Yes — guided tours are running throughout the conservation period, but they are outdoor-only. The current tour covers the Jealous Wall, the Victorian Walled Garden, the exterior of Belvedere House, and King Malachy's Throne. See the guided tours page for the full 2026 schedule and booking details.

Guided Tours & Estate Features

What days do guided tours run, and what time do they start?

All tours depart at 12:00pm from the Visitor Services Centre.

  • May–August: Wednesday and Saturday
  • September–April: Saturday only

Tours don't always run on every scheduled day — staffing and events can affect availability. Verify on the official booking page before travelling for a tour. Full details on our guided tours page.

What is the Jealous Wall?

The Jealous Wall is a three-storey fake Gothic ruin built around 1760 by Robert Rochfort, 1st Earl of Belvedere. He built it specifically to block the view of his brother George's house (Tudenham House) from the Belvedere estate. At ~20 metres high, it's the largest folly in Ireland. See the full Jealous Wall page for the story and photography guide.

What are the other follies at Belvedere besides the Jealous Wall?

There are two other Georgian follies on the estate, both designed by Thomas Wright (the astronomer-architect who first theorised the shape of the Milky Way):

  • The Gothic Arch (c.1760) — a castellated mock-entrance tower designed as a landscape focal point
  • The Octagonal Gazebo (c.1765) — a lakeside viewing tower on a raised terrace, northwest of the house

Full details on the follies page.

What is King Malachy's Throne at Belvedere?

King Malachy's Throne is a stone feature on the estate associated with Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill (Malachy II), High King of Ireland, who died in 1022 and had historical connections to this part of Co. Westmeath. It is included as a stop on the estate's guided walking tours.

Is there a fairy garden at Belvedere House?

Yes — the Belvedere Fairy Garden is at the bottom of the Victorian Walled Garden, beside a stream. It's a themed imaginative space with fairy doors, sprites, elves and pixie decorations set among plants and running water. Best suited to children aged 3–7. Included in the standard estate admission. Read more in the families section.

Sunday 19 July 2026, 10:00am – 5:00pm. Admission €15. A Food, Plant & Country Fair with plant stalls, live demos from horticultural experts, food trucks, music and a local makers market. See the full festival guide for what to expect, how to get there and where to stay.

Is the Garden Festival suitable for families?

Do I need to book the Garden Festival in advance?

Advance booking is strongly recommended — it's a one-day event at a popular venue in peak summer and capacity will be limited. Book via the official FareHarbor link on belvedere-house.ie. Our Garden Festival guide has the direct booking link and full practical details.

Where should I stay near Belvedere House?

Mullingar has solid accommodation 5–10 minutes from the estate — the 4-star Mullingar Park Hotel, the Greville Arms Hotel in the town centre, and several B&Bs closer to the lakeshore. For the Garden Festival weekend (arriving Saturday 18 July), book early — mid-July fills up. See our accommodation guide for options with Booking.com links.
