Overview — Four Play Areas, One Estate

Belvedere House has four children's play areas spread across the grounds, each offering different equipment and suited to different age ranges. They're positioned at intervals across the estate rather than clustered in one spot, which means children encounter play areas naturally on the trail walk rather than having to go back to a single location.

All play areas are included in standard estate admission — no separate ticketing. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times within the play areas.

The Main Play Area — Zip Line & Climbing Equipment

Best for ages 5–14⭐ Most popular~5 min from VSC

The main play area is the estate's largest and most varied, featuring a mix of climbing frames, slides, balancing equipment and the headline attraction: the 30-metre zip line. The zip line is the single most talked-about feature in visitor reviews — children who've been on it typically want a second go immediately. It runs on a fixed line through the open parkland, which means the views across the estate are part of the experience.

The remaining equipment in this area covers different physical challenges — upper body, balance, coordination — across a range of difficulty levels. Younger children in the 5–7 bracket will find appropriate equipment; older children up to about 14 will find enough of a challenge. The surface is safety-spec impact-absorbing material throughout.

Zip Line Rules

  • Wear loose clothing — tight clothing can catch
  • Closed shoes required — no sandals or flip flops
  • Long trousers recommended
  • Apply sun protection before use in sunny weather
  • Follow all instructions from estate staff
  • One rider at a time
  • Adult supervision required

Lakeside Swings & Lakeshore Play Area

Best for ages 3–10🌊 Lough Ennell views~15 min from VSC

A play area positioned on or near the Lough Ennell lakeshore section of the estate trail, featuring lakeside swings. The setting is the main attraction here — the swings face the lake, and on a clear day the views across Lough Ennell are genuinely beautiful. Positioned further from the main cluster, which means it often has fewer children using it than the main play area.

Suits younger children who want swings in a scenic setting rather than challenging climbing equipment. Good for combining with the lakeside walk for older siblings or parents while younger ones swing.

The Fairy Garden Play Area

Best for ages 3–7🧚 Imaginative play~8 min from VSC via Walled Garden

Located at the bottom of the Victorian Walled Garden, the Fairy Garden is a themed imaginative space with fairy doors, sprite and elf decorations set among plants and a stream. It functions as play-meets-discovery — children explore looking for fairy inhabitants rather than using structured equipment. For the 3–7 age range who are at the right developmental stage to fully commit to imaginative play, this is frequently the favourite memory of the visit.

Reach it by walking through the Walled Garden from the entrance — the Walled Garden itself becomes part of the experience, and the Fairy Garden at the far end is a natural reveal. Tip: brief children on the way in with "there are fairies hidden in the garden — can you find them?" to sustain engagement through the whole Walled Garden walk.

Fourth Play Area

Mixed agesEstate grounds

The estate's fourth play area is positioned within the broader grounds — collect the estate map at the Visitor Services Centre on arrival, which shows the current location of all play areas. Play areas can be moved or upgraded as part of the estate's ongoing improvement programme; the map at reception will reflect the current layout more accurately than any published resource.

Age Guide — Which Play Areas for Which Children

Sequence tip: Go to the main play area first — children who've been in a car for 90 minutes need to discharge energy before they'll walk willingly to the Jealous Wall. Play → Jealous Wall → woodland trail → Walled Garden/Fairy Garden → café works well for most families.
